New York Bridal Fashion Week
As I prepare for my second fashion week, I've been doing so much reflecting on this past April and want to invite you into this story.
It was day 2 of NYBFW and by far a day that I will never forget. Being around so many professional photographers, there was this underlying feeling that I needed to have the mentality of "fake it til you make it." And what I'm about to share with you is a moment that went from absolute "fan-girl-ing" in the hallway to a knock on the door where I was supposed to have it all together.
Before heading to New York, Sarah Bradshaw - a friend and mentor, told me some of the best advice I've heard, just ask, the worst thing that will happen is that you'll be told no. So what did I do? Flew to New York and asked at every door, physical and metaphorical, that I possibly could. Sarah had told me a story of a time when she attended a show at The Plaza simply because she asked if she could go. So I asked a photographer that I had met what shows she was attending the next day and to my surprise and delight she told me she would be with Jaclyn Whyte at 11:30AM at The Plaza Hotel. I think that was a moment for me that was frozen in time. It felt like FINALLY I was getting to photograph brides in one of the most iconic buildings in the world.
Daryn and I show up, Walgreen's lip stick and all, to check in at the Plaza and to our surprise are sent to the penthouse. We had a 20 second elevator ride to compose our excitement and walk in this suite as poised and composed as possible. It was the most delightful environment to be in: a designer who had perfected her craft, a jaw-dropping set, and a moment that was straight out of a movie. I referenced the scene in The Parent Trap often when Annie goes with her mom to a bridal shoot in London; I felt like I got to be Annie for just a minute.
